Many newcomers to Canada possess a wealth of textile hand-skills taught to them as part of their cultural identity, to embellish clothing, decorate ceremonial items or to enhance items in the home. Many of these specialized hand-skills are overlooked and not used, therefore do not get exposed, handed down and preserved.
Video directed by Joseph Enaje and Andrew Wright.
The George Brown College Fashion Exchange’s Hidden Talents project proudly collaborated with skilled embroidery artists Souher Toulaymat, Asmaa Toulimat, Lejla Krdzalic, Zohreh Shaba, Zohreh Bibi, and Urfa Arshad Butt. This initiative provided these talented women a platform to showcase their intricate craftsmanship, celebrate their cultural heritage, and connect with the community through artistry.
Fashion Exchange thanks the embroidery artists for their participation, Shahrzad Sadeghi for facilitating, Joseph Enaje, Andrew Wright, Michael Nguyen and Jiachen Wang for their video production work, Allan Penning and the GBC Foundation for their support and especially the R. Howard Webster Foundation for making this project possible.
George Brown College Fashion Exchange is truly grateful to have the opportunity to collaborate with Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, Elizabeth Dowdeswell to create this video.
